About the work
Jonathan Reisner’s work is part of the Leipzig Drawings series, created during his time in the German city as part of his art studies. The series is characterized by swift, linear drawings that explore compositions, situations, and motifs as preparatory studies for painting. In this drawing, that exploration begins to move closer to painting itself.
At the center stands a Renaissance-like figure, carrying a sense of refinement, culture, and the shaping hand of society. By his side, three monkeys embody the primal and the instinctive. The presence of the iPhone anchors the scene in the twenty-first century, where two forms of recording converge: the quick gesture of drawing and the restless device of self-depiction.
